Bladen County Schools is pleased to announce that all district elementary schools have been selected to participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for the 2025-2026 school year. The program provides elementary students attending Bladen Lakes Primary, Bladenboro Primary, Dublin Primary, East Arcadia Elementary, Elizabethtown Primary, and Tar Heel School with fresh fruit and vegetable snacks throughout the week at no cost.

Introducing children to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables at a young age helps them to develop healthy eating habits that can last a lifetime.

“This program reflects our commitment to supporting the whole child,” said Dr. Jason Atkinson, Superintendent of Bladen County Schools. “By providing our youngest learners with fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day, we’re not only fueling their bodies but also reinforcing healthy choices that will serve them for years to come.”

The FFVP is designed to introduce children to new, healthy foods while providing nutritional education during snack time. Research by the USDA has demonstrated that students participating in the program consume more fruits and vegetables compared to their non-participating peers.

Beyond just providing healthy snacks, the program serves as an educational tool, teaching students about seasonal produce and encouraging them to try new foods. Schools participating in the program incorporate brief nutrition lessons during snack time, helping students understand the importance of healthy eating habits.

“Our school nutrition team is excited to bring the FFVP to all of our elementary schools this year,” added Crystal O’Briant, Director of School Nutrition. “This grant allows us to introduce students to a wide variety of fresh produce—some they may be trying for the very first time. It’s a fun, engaging way to make nutrition education part of their daily routine.”

Join us in congratulating these schools for receiving the FFVP Grant for the 2025-2026 school year!
